Green Key Accreditation

We’re proud to announce that Holiday Inn Manchester Airport has been awarded the Green Key Certification, a mark of our commitment to sustainable hospitality.

What is Green Key?

Green Key is an international eco-label for tourism facilities. Since 1994, Green Key has been a leading standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. The Green Key programme is run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education. In England it is managed by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

Green Key provides a well-proven framework for an establishment to work with its environmental management on sustainability issues, including awareness raising. The high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent on-site audits.

Green Key is eligible for hotels, hostels, small accommodations, campsites, holiday parks, conference centres, restaurants, and attractions.

For guests, a Green Key shows that the establishment is committed to reducing the environmental impact of their stay. The Green Key programme is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2030 addressed by the United Nations

Our Sustainability Initiatives

• Zero Waste to Landfill: We divert all waste from landfill, with 45% of it being recycled. We’ve also eliminated single-use plastics wherever possible, and all refuse is sorted off-site to ensure sustainability.

• Water Conservation: 25% of our water is recycled through our grey water reuse system. The grey water is used to flush toilets, conserving drinking water. We also have economizers and pressure reducers on every tap and shower to reduce water consumption.

• Renewable Energy: 100% of the energy we use comes from renewable sources. To further reduce energy waste, we’ve installed movement sensors in all common areas, corridors, and staff spaces, ensuring electricity is only used when needed.

• BREEAM Accreditation: We are pursuing certification under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), aiming to meet high environmental standards in building design and operation.

• Energy Efficiency: Our design incorporates passive strategies and energy-efficient measures, such as optimized glazing to reduce solar gain, enhanced building insulation, improved air tightness, and the use of air source heat pumps, all contributing to reduced CO₂ emissions.

• Light Pollution Reduction: We have implemented measures to minimize the impact of artificial lighting on the surrounding environment, preserving local amenity and natural habitats.

• Accessibility: The hotel’s layout is thoughtfully designed to be inclusive and accessible, adhering to relevant legislation and guidelines to accommodate all guests comfortably.

• Sustainable Design: Our compact building footprint and thoughtful design align with the Manchester Airport Sustainable Development Plan, ensuring high-quality design and placemaking.

• Proximity to Natural Sites: Located approximately 450 meters northwest of Painswick Park Meadow, a site of biological interest, we are committed to preserving local biodiversity.

• Public Transport Accessibility: The hotel benefits from excellent public transport links, with rail, bus, and light rail connections within 250 meters, promoting sustainable travel options for our guests.

• Natural Lighting in Meeting Rooms: Our meeting spaces are strategically oriented with glazed walls to provide ample north light without direct glare, enhancing comfort and reducing the need for artificial lighting.

• Environmental Construction Practices: During construction, we ensured that vegetation clearance occurred outside of bird breeding seasons and conducted ecological assessments to protect local wildlife habitats.
